April Fools

For many years, I spent my life accepting everything at face value. I celebrated things like Valentines Day, Pancake Day, Halloween, even Christmas, without questioning how they all came about.

Those days are gone, my friend! Now I question everything to death. I even questioned why I started questioning everything to death (I know... there is no hope).
I figure it could be because:

  • I'm a writer now; this is what I do.
  • I studied philosophy last year, which introduced me to the world of Critical Thinking.
  • I've simply become a cynical, bitter old swine, who trusts no-one.
  • I'm suffering from some kind of disease that's mentally reverting me back to my toddler years.

Fitting, really, that I start my A-Z Blogging Challenge, then, with a little piece on the origin of April Fools Day.

This is another thing that escaped questioning. I merely laughed at all the funny pranks and winced at all the (completely unfunny) "I'm pregnant" announcements.

According to Wikipedia:

In the Middle Ages, New Year's Day was celebrated on March 25 in most European towns. In some areas of France, New Year's was a week-long holiday ending on April 1. Many writers suggest that April Fools originated because those who celebrated on January 1 made fun of those who celebrated on other dates. The use of January 1 as New Year's Day was common in France by the mid-16th century, and this date was adopted officially in 1564.

New Years Day used to be March 25? I was not aware of that. To be fair, this could be common knowledge: I'm not really up to speed with general knowledge either...

What's the funniest April Fools Hoax you've ever played/had played on you? Go on... fill my page with hilarity!

For all you music lovers out there, here's a song from Arctic Monkeys: Settle for a draw. This was a B side track to "When The Sun Goes Down" in 2006 and should have been brought out as a single in it's own right. Sigh.

Probably a good time to tell you, I used to be obsessed with this band. Enjoy!

Great post Catherine.

In the 80's when I was a London Zoo keeper I had to move some primates from their cage to accomodate the Lirpa loof...

I just found it on You tube searching 'lirpa loof that's life'. I was in the back letting people in and out! It was very well done.

Thanks for sharing. What an interesting post. I never knew that about April Fool's day, so I'm more well informed now.

Hi Catherine, I'll be joining you in the thinking too much stakes as starting a philosophy course soon. An April Fool's friends played on me when we worked together many years ago was telling me that the swimming pool had burned down, when I'd finally remembered my stuff to go after work. They had the whole office involved and told me the truth at the end of the day! Check out my A-Z posts at http://saintlywriter.blogspot.co.uk/

Hi there, first of all thanks for coming over to my blog! I appreciate your visit!
Secondly, I also don't like apostrophes and I'm sometimes all confused as to the correct position of apostrophes when dealing with words ending in 's'.

This is me, Duncan D. Horne, visiting you from the A-Z challenge, wishing you all the best throughout April and beyond.

That is good sign. Those who still have a part of their childhood in them are the blessed ones.

I'm a huge fan of the soup shower - bouillon cubes in the shower head for a very brothy shower.

I subscribed to your blog.

I have played so many April Fool's Day jokes it is hard for me to remember the best one.

I think the one I used a number of times on unsuspecting people is the one where you get an empty ice cream cone and fill it up with mashed potatoes. Of course, you can decorate it how you wish.

I found out that kids especially don't see the humor in it. lol

I never knew about the origin to April Fool's Day. Thanks for sharing.

The funniest April Fool joke I did was back in college. I challenged a friend to balance a full, near-overflowing glass of water on their two index fingers. Then we got someone else to sit opposite him, to do the same trick and see who could balance for the longest.

Needless to say, the balancing bit was easy, but then we just got up and left them, with no one to remove the glass from their fingers. If either moved, the other would get drenched by a torrent of spilled water!

@Tasha Seegmiller: Haha that’s disgusting! *makes mental note for next year*

@Jeremy Bates: Thanks so much for subscribing! You’ll probably vomit at what I’m about to say next… but I would probably enjoy a mashed potato ice cream cone haha! I am a bit of a tottie fiend. I’d pay good money to see the expressions on your “victim”’s faces *snigger*

@Sulekkha: That. Is. HILARIOUS! I’d have been similarly fuming at such a phone call, but I hope you had a good laugh in the end hee hee!

@J.C. Martin: You’re very welcome! Your April Fools joke is sooo good; did you go back and see the damp aftermath? Chuckle… I’m taking notes!
